RaviShankar Prasad Replaced with Monoj Sinha as Telecom Minister

Railways minister Monoj Sinha will be the new Telecom minister of India.

After long time and ensuing UP elections BJP Government as part of major reshuffle of the Union ministers, new Telecom minister Manoj Sinha appointed for Telecommunications in place of RaviShankar prasad.

Whereas, Ravishankar prasad will be handling Electronics and Information Technology portfolios with addition Law and Justice portfolio.

The removal of Ravi Shankar Prasad as the telecom minister is happening at a time when the Indian government is trying to sell spectrum worth $83 billion in the next 2-3 months. Recent analyst reports suggest that there will be poor response from mobile industry stakeholders for the spectrum auction, and bids worth $12 billion to $15 billion will be received during the spectrum auction. The poor response is despite the fact that the Government is trying to sell higher quantities of spectrum.

Many in the telecom business believe that Ravi Shankar Prasad did not make any significant achievement for the Indian telecom industry in the last two years.

During the tenure of Ravi Shankar Prasad, the India government could not take any decisive action on call drop issue despite the fact the prime minister Narendra Modi himself recommended strong actions to reduce call drops across the country. The telecom ministry could not assist mobile industry to deploy adequate base stations because of state level guidelines and court issues.

An official who has worked with Sinha at close quarters said, 'New Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha will do a good job at telecom. He is among the most active, powerful and no-nonsense MoSs that the ministry has ever seen'.

He though takes over from Ravi Shankar Prasad under whose watch many long-pending rules, such as those around spectrum trading, sharing, virtual network operators have been cleared, spectrum held by defence has been released for commercial use and state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited's revival has been kickstarted.
