Bharat bill pay app: BSNL First to join BBPS Online Recharge category

Bharat bill payment system BBPS now allows all BSNL prepaid customers to recharge any prepaid plan voucher, STVs, top ups under GSM mobile recharge segment.

Public Telecommunications Company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited - BSNL joined the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) as the first mobile operator in the prepaid recharge category.

Recently BSNL Selfcare new portal mobile application launched for Prepaid customer for recharges, to know existing plans, migration plans, recharge friends and family number and Postpaid bill payment etc.

In June 2021, RBI (Reserve Bank of India) published a circular focusing primarily on expanding the coverage and scope of the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) by enabling prepaid recharge as a billing category. With this latest development, BSNL prepaid mobile customers can use the BHIM UPI app to easily recharge their numbers.


Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) is an integrated online bill payment platform established by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). 

Bharat Bill Payment System began operating in 2014 as a platform to automate the payment of bills for five different types of bills: Direct To Home (DTH), electricity bill, gas, telecommunications and water.

 The recently added mobile prepaid recharge feature will allow BSNL to easily update its mobile prepaid recharge plans and make them available to all its customers through millions of touchpoints, including physical apps / websites / channels enabled with Bharat BillPay. .

In statement Shri Pravin Kumar Puwar, CMD, BSNL sai, “We happily announce that the first biller to join the BBPS prepaid recharge category is BSNL and look forward to expanding our services to our consumers on the platform nationwide. Consumers can easily recharge their BSNL mobile prepaid plans through a myriad of easy-to-access channels".


On this event, Shri Chaturvedi N, CEO of NPCI Bharat Bill Pay Ltd said, “We welcome public telecom company BSNL as the first telecom company to include on our platform under new segment of prepaid number recharges. Adding prepaid mobile recharges to BBPS would provide consumers with a convenient, consistent and secure transaction experience. We hope to bring more operators into this category and further strengthen the ecosystem. Our ongoing commitment will be to build a diversified ecosystem, in partnership with Billers, Banks and Fintechs alike".

What is the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS)?

Bharat's bill payment system is a conceptualized ecosystem of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) powered by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). It is a one-stop-shop ecosystem for all recurring invoices providing an interoperable and accessible "anytime, anywhere" recurring payment service for all customers across India with certainty, reliability and security of transactions.


The Bharat bill payment system or Bharat Bill pay has multiple payment methods and provides instant payment confirmation via SMS or a receipt with a security symbol. 

Offers repetitive payments of all kinds such as electricity, telecommunications, DTH, gas, water bills, insurance premium, loan repayments, cable, FASTag recharge, tuition, credit card, city tax, mortgage subscription fees, housing company , etc. through a single window. 

An effective mechanism for handling consumer complaints has also been put in place to assist consumers with any billing issues at BBPS.

The new prepaid mobile charging category combines segments such as telecommunications, electricity, DTH gas, tuition, city taxes, water, insurance, loan repayments, subscription fees, among others. Bharat Bill Pay is also in advanced talks with other telecom operators to bring them to the platform, which will provide additional options and channels for their mobile prepaid recharges.
